Introduction

A “Derby” car is a car that moves on a ramp using gravity. The student competition “Derby Car Racing” creates ample opportunities for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in both technology education and other subjects. For example, knowledge of physics will come in handy, helping to design a car that moves as smoothly as possible. The design and finish of the car are also important.

Requirements for the car

The car must fulfil the following requirements:

  1. The car body is wooden and has a free design.
  2. The car must meet the following technical parameters:
    • Width - the total width of the car must not exceed 70 mm.
    • Height - the total height of the car must not exceed 76 mm.
    • Length - the total length of the car must not exceed 178 mm.
    • The width between the wheels of the car must be 45 mm (necessary for the car to fit exactly in the roadway).
    • The bottom height of the car must be 10mm.
  3. Mass - the car must not exceed 142g.
  4. The wheels must be at least 8 mm wide. Look at the drawing. The diameter of the wheels must be between 29-31 mm. The car must roll on at least three wheels. The material of the wheels is freely selectable.
  5. Can be used for wheel axles/fastening to the body only nails, which may be polished and coated with lubricant.
  6. Only dry lubricants such as graphite or powdered Teflon are allowed on the wheels/axles.
  7. It is allowed to add various details to the car, such as steering wheel, driver, stickers, if they do not exceed the maximum dimensions and weight of the car.
  8. Before participating in the competition, each car must pass an inspection/inspection, where the dimensions/maximum dimensions and the weight of the car are checked. If the car does not pass the inspection, the reason will be announced and time will be given to correct the error before a new inspection.
  9. During the race, the driver/manufacturer of the car must place the car on the race track.
  10. The car is made individually (made by only one student)
  11. Up to 8 cars/students can participate from one school

The race track is 11.66 m long and 4 cars compete at the same time. The start is given to four cars at the same time from a height of 1.2 m above the ground. The sensors measure the exact time, how fast the car passes the track and the result is displayed on the screen.

Competitions are held in two age groups - II and III school grades. The first three places in both age groups will receive a prize and all participants will receive a certificate of participation. Supervisors/teachers can also compete with each other.

In addition, various awards are given to cars with the best design solutions. To participate in the design competition, you must send a picture of your car a week before the competition to the address info@derbyauto.ee
